DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin claimed that the court-ordered CBI inquiry into the transfer of Rs. 570 crore would shed light on how the Assembly elections were conducted in Tamil Nadu.Mr Stalin, who demanded a white paper on the issue, said the DMK’s attempt to raise the issue in the Assembly was not allowed by the Speaker. “Now the court has ordered a CBI inquiry,” he said in Chennai.
PMK leader Dr. S. Ramadoss said the explanation offered by the Election Commission on the issue had failed to clear the doubts. “The manner in which the Reserve Bank of India and the State Bank of India conducted themselves remains mysterious,” he said.
Dr. Ramadoss said SBI staked claim over the money 18 hours after the three containers were intercepted and it had rejected the demand for the video recording of the money being shifted to the containers from the cellars of the bank in Coimbatore.“Money played a major role in the election and there was an attempt to protect someone in this money transfer,” he alleged and called upon everyone to cooperate with the central agency.
Former Union Minister and TMC leader G.K. Vasan expressed the hope that an inquiry by the CBI will bring out the truth behind the transportation of Rs 570 crore.
“Transport of such huge money caused suspicion among the people and the Government has failed to come out with a clear answer. The order of the High Court is a welcome step,” he said in a statement.
MDMK leader Vaiko also hailed the court order.
