" Unlicensed child welfare homes" run in Tamil Nadu and the number of children housed there are a cause of concern, said Chennai high court, which ruled that action should be taken keeping in mind the welfare of children and not the religion to which the homes belong.
The Chief Justice Mr.Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R.Mahadevan, passing further orders on a PIL filed by social worker Mr.A.Narayanan, also referred to the fact that in April-May this year alone, a total of 13 homes had to be closed in the tamil nadu.
The 231 children housed in these unlicensed homes, 212 were restored to their families and 19 were shifted to other child care institutions, the judges said, adding: "This figure by itself thus seems to suggest the enormity of the problem where the children not required to be in these homes are being so kept, as 212 of them have found a place back in their homes. If this figure is magnified for the whole of Tamil Nadu, for which the progress is to be made, the figure would be more alarming."
The matter was then adjourned to September 2 for further hearing.
