Nokia is preparing to launch three Android smartphones in 2017, presumably in the first quarter of the year. Of these the phone that is likely to be most affordable will be the rumoured Nokia D1C. According to the latest leaks, the phone will come in two variants. The base variant with 2GB RAM will cost around $150, which will be slightly less than Rs 10,000 in India. The other version, with 3GB RAM, will likely cost $200, which may mean that the phone could be sold in India at a price of under Rs 15,000.
The Nokia D1C will use Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor. It will have a FullHD screen measuring 5.5-inch and it will come with 13-megapixel rear camera. On the front, there will be an 8-megapixel camera. The phone will likely use a customised version of Android Nougat. It is also possible that the higher-priced variant will have a 16-megapixel camera and that it may come with more internal storage. The base variant is likely to have 16GB internal storage.It is believed that the Nokia D1C will be manufactured by Foxconn. HMD, the company that will use the Nokia brand, is already hard at work in countries like India, rebuilding the supply and marketing channels using the remains left behind by the old Nokia. The HMD CEO Arto Nummela has hinted that for the company the most affordable smartphone - likely to be Nokia D1C - will be its most important device in India.
In India, the Nokia D1C will compete against some very capable phones from Moto Moto G4 class and Xiaomi Redmi phones. Of these the Redmi Note 3, with its formidable hardware and very attractive price, may prove to be the toughest competitor for Nokia D1C.
At the same time, it is important to note that Nokia, even after years of debacle, in India enjoys a brand recognition and trust that is seemingly better than what Xiaomi, Lenovo or companies like Le Eco have. Although on the trust part, Moto phones too, because of their Motorola heritage, enjoy good rapport with Indian consumers.
