Wrestler Sakshi Malik today beat Kyrgyzstan's Aisuluu Tynybekova in Women's Freestyle 58 kg Bronze medal match to open India's account at the ongoing Rio Olympics 2016.(Rio Olympics 2016 full coverage)The 23-year-old from Rohtak overturned a 0-5 deficit in a hectic second round to win 8-5 in the bronze medal bout at the Carioca Arena 2.
She also became the country's first female wrestler to win an Olympic medal. (Rio 2016)The medal certainly didn't come easily for the Haryana wrestler as she had to fight all three bouts within a gap of a few hours in between.Coming back from 0-5 down, Sakshi outclassed Tynybekova 8-5 in the Bronze medal match.
In the Repechage, Sakshi made lightwork of Mongolian wrestler Orkhon Purevdorj and won the bout by a handsome margin of 12-3.Earlier, Sakshi, who earned her Olympic quota by winning a silver medal in the second World Olympic Games Qualifying Tournament in Istanbul, defeated Sweden's Malin Johanna Mattson 5-4 in the women's Freestyle 58 kg qualification match to progress into the pre-quarters.
She then outclassed Moldova's Mariana Esanu Cherdivara on a four point take down criteria to enter the quarter-finals, where she lost 2-9 to Russia's Valeria Koblova. However, she stayed in contention for the Bronze via Repechage as Valeria made it to the final.
