Is this optimistic view on the death of Tesla's driver is appreciable?

As we all know the first ever death in autonomous car happened in May this year. The detailed report was revealed by US safety administration. Its stated that Joshua Brown who was the one driving this Tesla Model S which is switched to Autopilot mode hit an articulated lorry. This was due to the self driving system failed to distinguish the white truck crossing due to bright environment. Tesla stated that the self driving feature is still in its beta testing phase and it's only in semi autonomous mode. The drivers are instructed to keep their hands on steering wheels in case of software hiccup too. This system raised a question as why these semi autonomous driving feature which is still to be tested completely is given in the hands of customer. There was a statement in this investigation that Brown was driving it at the speed of 85 mph and he was watching a movie too but yet not confirmed. However Tesla approached it positively by stating that 70-90% of accidents occurred due to human. So these kinds of features are meant to avoid these incidents in future and they are meant to be learnt from these kinds of mistakes. These autonomous vehicles are much safer than the present one.
